Our Story
It all started during the period when I worked in the construction industry helping to improve the image of various participants – everyone from architects and builders to suppliers of windows and doors. All of them were from the SME sector. Having a financial background and looking at things with a fresh eye (and sometimes from the customer's point of view) made it easy to spot discrepancies, uncertainty and inconsistent profitability in the industry.
My thought was that there must be a better way of conducting construction projects. I just needed to find it. Thorough research brought me to the LEAN Construction philosophy. LEAN Construction is "a method of designing production systems in such a way as to minimize waste of materials, time, and effort in order to generate the maximum possible amount of value (Koskela et al. 2002)". LEAN Construction "recognizes that desired ends affect the means to achieve these ends, and that available means will affect realized ends (Lichtig 2004)". "Designing a production system to achieve the stated ends is only possible through the collaboration of all project participants (Owner, A/E, Contractors, Facility Managers, End-User) at early stages of the project. This goes beyond the contractual arrangement of design/build or constructability reviews where contractors, and sometime facility managers, merely react to designs instead of informing and influencing the design (Abdelhamid et al. 2008)".
You can find a great deal of interesting materials, facts and figures about LEAN Construction. You may even be impressed by how it can eliminate waste and deliver significant sustained improvements in efficiency and quality. The theory is great, but implementation is what makes the difference. What I have found is that despite hundreds of experimental projects and double digit savings and other achievements, only a fraction of the companies in the construction industry apply these techniques to their projects. Not surprisingly, most of them are big companies with huge projects, but the same principles work perfectly in smaller scale projects; they are all based on common sense and a good relationship between all project participants (something that is much easier to achieve with a smaller project with fewer people involved).
So why not adapt the core philosophy to the needs of SME in construction? Why not provide builders with the opportunity to do what they are supposed to do: build? This is possible because everything else will be taken care of beforehand.
That's how the BFLOW system was born. It is a Building process that stands for Feasible, Lean, Optimized and Willing. The BFLOW journey starts...
